From January 18th – 25th, 2026, UNC Department of Anesthesiology is thrilled to celebrate our 70+ CRNAs for National CRNA Recognition Week! Nurse anesthetists across our healthcare system are critical members of UNC Health’s peri-operative frontline. Almost 60,000* CRNAs safely administer more than 50 million anesthetics to patients each year across the U.S.  Nurse anesthetists represent more than 80% of the anesthesia providers in rural counties, where critical access hospitals often rely on independently practicing CRNAs for anesthesia care.

2026 events planned for National CRNA Recognition Week at UNC Hospitals were celebratory and purposeful.  They included:

Mentor Monday – Giving gratitude to the hearts that inspire. A day for each CRNA team member to remember those who inspired your journey into an amazing profession, including UNC Anesthesiology’s many fantastic mentors who have helped CRNAs entering the field find their place at UNC.
Technique Tuesday – “Tip The Bartender!” CRNAs submitted favorite anesthesia tips to share with recent graduates and early-career CRNAs.
Wednesday – CRNA Breakfast at all UNC Hospitals locations. Drop-in session to learn and practice ultrasound-guided PIVs
Thursday – UNC Therapy Dog visit
Friday – Cake Party at UNC Medical Center!

UNC Anesthesiology Chief CRNA Aaron Lemmon stated: “While it is important to celebrate this highly respected profession during this week, we would be remiss if we did not recognize the hard work and dedication that this group provides day in and day out throughout the year. UNC, like many other healthcare facilities across the country, is currently battling significant staffing shortages. Despite this, [UNC Health]’s CRNAs have remained flexible provide countless hours of overtime in an effort to keep the operating rooms running across our many locations. This dedication to patient care ensures that the citizens of North Carolina continue to have access to the care that they so desperately need. It has always been an honor of mine to work at UNC as a CRNA, as well as a member of this leadership team. I am humbled by how much the [CRNA] team I work with gives of themselves to care for their patients.”

John Coleman, MD

Andres Rojas, MD

Nathan Painter, MD

UNC Anesthesiology proudly celebrates the national educational contributions of Drs. John ColemanAndres Rojas, and Nathan Painter, all of whom have been formally recognized by the American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) for their service to the Summaries of Emerging Evidence (SEE) program.

SEE is a nationally and internationally distributed continuing medical education (CME) program that synthesizes emerging research in anesthesiology, critical care, and pain medicine. Published twice yearly, SEE reviews 200 high-impact articles annually drawn from approximately 30 international medical journals and reaches more than 5,500 subscribers worldwide. The program is widely regarded as one of the ASA’s most influential educational offerings and depends entirely on the volunteer efforts of expert anesthesiologist educators.

National Leadership Across the SEE Editorial Continuum

Together, Drs. Coleman, Rojas, and Painter represent excellence across all levels of the SEE program — from early career writer to full writer to editor.
Advancing Anesthesiology Through Service and Scholarship
The SEE program relies on hundreds of volunteer hours from a select group of writers and editors nationwide. Recognition from ASA leadership underscores the significance of these faculty members’ contributions—not only to continuing medical education but also to advancing anesthesiology as a specialty.
UNC Anesthesiology Chair Ted Sakai, MD, PhD, MHA, FASA, noted: ” We congratulate Drs. Coleman, Rojas, and Painter on this well-earned national recognition and thank them for exemplifying UNC’s commitment to academic excellence, educational leadership, and professional service.”

UNC Anesthesiology is pleased to recognize UNC Pain Medicine Division Associate Professor of Anesthesiology Maryam Jowza, MD, for her contributed expertise to an early January Fox News Health report on why non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) have been speculated as the class of OTCs most linked to elevated cardiovascular risk.

Among several pain medicine experts interviewed by Fox News Health, Dr. Jowza explained that while NSAIDs (eg, ibuprofen, naproxen), are widely taken as a proven class of OTCs to reduce bodily pain, fever and inflammation, when taken at higher doses and for a longer duration, they introduce an increased risk of heart disease and stroke.

Dr. Jowza noted: “NSAIDs reduce production of prostaglandins, which are involved not only in inflammation, but also in other body functions. NSAIDS can influence the tone of blood vessels, and when taken at higher doses for a longer duration, they are more likely to increase blood pressure.”

For comparison, Dr. Jowza also discussed non-NSAIDs (eg, acetaminophen), which also achieve pain relief through reducing inflammation. By acting on the brain’s pain signals instead of affecting blood vessels via targeting prostaglandin production, non-NSAIDS pose less risk for increased blood pressure.  Dr. Jowza offered similar words as others interviewed by Fox News Health for this health report — All NSAIDs should be used at the lowest effective dose for the shortest duration.

UNC Anesthesiology congratulates UNC Health’s “One Great Team” Obstetric Anesthesiology members for their contributions to excellence in maternity care at North Carolina Women’s Hospital, named for the 5th consecutive year as a U.S. News & World Report “High Performing Maternity Care” Hospital! UNC was recognized among 495 “High Performing Maternity Care” Hospitals in 2026 based upon data analysis of multiple factors that U.S. News & World Report deems as determinants of providing high-quality labor & delivery services for uncomplicated pregnancies.

Since 2021, U.S. News & World Report’s widely regarded annual rankings have honored hospitals that provide high-quality labor & delivery services for uncomplicated and complicated pregnancies.  Major determinants of high performance in maternity care include: 1) childbirth using C-section rates; 2) newborn severe complication rates; 3) routine vaginal birth after cesarean delivery (VBAC) rates; 4) episiotomy rates; 5) best practices to support breast milk feeding; 6) meeting federal criteria for “birthing-friendly” practices; and 7) outcomes tracking of disparities.

UNC Anesthesiology congratulates Assistant Professor Michael Hart, MD, on receiving a UNC Provost’s Office of Faculty Affairs IBM Junior Faculty Development Award. For the 2026-2027 awards cycle, the Office of Faculty Affairs’ Committee on Faculty Leaves and Awards granted Dr. Hart $10K for his 12-month project entitled: “Standardizing and Strengthening Debriefing in Anesthesiology Simulation: Faculty Development, CRM Integration, and Measured Impact.”  Dr. Hart’s project aims to elevate the quality and consistency of clinical faculty debriefing practices within the UNC Anesthesiology Simulation Program through closing gaps where simulation scenarios used by teaching faculty are well-established, though vary widely, often emphasizing clinical events over reflective learning or crisis resource management (CRM) principles.

Over 12-month award period, Dr. Hart will undergo advanced debriefing training through The Center for Medical Simulation’s Advanced Instructor Course to acquire faculty leadership skills to guide and oversee standardization of debriefing practices across the department.  From the advanced debriefing training, Dr. Hart will design and implement a standardized debriefing toolkit that incorporates evidence-based frameworks such as PEARLS and advocacy–inquiry, with explicit integration of Crisis Resource Management (CRM) concepts. Dr. Hart will then lead structured workshops to train UNC simulation faculty in the use of this toolkit, supported by pocket guides and checklists to facilitate adoption.

Of his project’s merits, Dr. Hart noted: “Because debriefing is the most potent determinant of learning in simulation-based education, improving this component has significant potential to enhance resident educational outcomes, faculty confidence, and the program’s scholarly productivity.”
